Red and Khaki


He bent down to tie his laces.

“Why do you have red shoes?” I asked. Red seemed like an outrageous colour for someone so beige and khaki-green as Milo.

“My old ones,” the black ones, which he had worn the entire time we dated, “bit the dust. It was really sad. They really couldn’t go on.”

“That sucks, did they finally fall apart?”

“No, they never recovered from the creek.”

“Why were you by the creek?”

“I was looking for a stick for my wizard costume. I stepped in, and the shoes just never recovered. The stench was pretty unbearable actually. Red seemed like an alright choice at the time.”

Thus, he wore khaki pants with red running shoes.
